Screenwriting

One of the things I will be doing this summer is taking a screenwriting class.  I have no idea if I’ll be good at screenwriting or not, but it’s a form of writing I haven’t taken yet and I’m looking forward to trying out a different format to see what happens.  The book we’re using for the class is Writing Screenplays That Sell by Michael Hauge and I’ve just started reading my assignment for next week.  I have to say I appreciate any book that tells me to go watch movies.  I have been challenged to watch at least two movies a week, so what movies should I be watching?  What are your favorites from 1985 to the present?

  1. Favourite movies: Battle Royale (2000), The Big Lebowski, LoTR (1 & 3 extended versions, 2 cut version), hell, I’m boring …

Are you looking for different genres? A selection? Maybe some sort of popular ranking would be of help. Or by sale figures (since the name of your course contains the words ‘that sell’). I found the Bourne movies well-made. Then there are a few mid-class American Indie productions which are amusing, but lack in the original plot department. I always find you can learn more from mistakes than perfection. Rom Com-types are not really my thing, but if I were in your place I’d look for some classics. (9+1/2 weeks, Pretty Woman, can’t really think of many, sorry). And then you have the mass hysteria genre (yes, I made it up!) like the Twilights of this world. Hope this helps.

LOL The Twilight movies are painful, but useful if you’ve read the books (also painful) and compare the two to see what choices were made and to think about what would have changed had they gone with different choices. I was mainly looking for the movies people love to watch over and over again. I’m going to see the new Star Trek movie on Monday and I just saw Iron Man 3 last week.
